In the Judeo-Christian religion, God creates the Universe, the Earth and Life through the Word. “Let there be light. And there was light.” The creation of man takes on a special form, totally distinct from the rest of creation. He takes form through the Hands of the Creator, and existence/life is created through the divine Breath. In line with this conception, he also acquires the absolute characteristic of likeness to his own creator. The man’s ability to create by himself, through the power of his hands thus becomes the mark of the great destiny and the meaning of the whole human existence.
Throughout the course of history, the acquisition of skills, the mastery of different execution techniques of various crafts in order to obtain the desired quality of the many types of products created by man has been a constant in the progress of civilizations. When, as a creator, the man succeeds in transferring, through the creative process, his whole inner life, he succeeds in crossing the boundary from the Profane to the Sacred. In this way, the object of his creation acquires its own identity and voice, and also, the ability to communicate the emotions felt in the act of creation. From that moment on, the product created by man becomes what we call Art. It has its own voice- any attempt that the creator might make in order to explain or to describe the created product does nothing but nullify the identity of his creation and the creative act itself.
In the art of ceramics, the voices of the pots, created by the potter, are the very essence of his thoughts and emotions. No further explanation is needed when this transfer is truly accomplished.
